Perched on a hilltop on the western edge of the valley, Swayambhunath — better known as the Monkey Temple — offers one of the best panoramic views of Kathmandu, especially at sunset when the golden stupa catches the last light.
The climb up the 365 stone steps is part of the experience, lined with prayer wheels, carved statues, and, true to its nickname, plenty of resident monkeys. Give yourself at least an hour to walk the stupa’s base and take in the surrounding monasteries.
From Tulsi Kathmandu Hotel, it’s a short taxi ride or a longer, scenic walk — either way, it’s one of the easiest half-day trips to fit into a Thamel-based itinerary.
